Digital Scholarship Lab: Thoughts on Laboratories and Libraries from MSU

On February 5th, 2018, I attended a reception celebrating the opening of the Michigan State University Digital Scholarship lab. It was introduced to me as a ‘transformative space for teaching and learning.’ From a glance through the website, it is easy to see that the DSL has a lot to offer. From work spaces including digitization labs, meeting rooms, and computer labs with dozens of software packages available for free to VR systems and an ‘Igloo’ 360 visualization room, the space is brimming with capability. MSU’s Digital Scholarship Lab first of its kind in the US

Michigan State University Libraries and the College of Arts & Letters partnered to build the 10,000-square-foot Digital Scholarship Lab (DSL), which, besides the 360-degree immersive visualization room, will feature a virtual reality room with VR headsets, instruction space, meeting rooms, offices, and a dedicated room for digitization projects. Digital Scholarship Lab First of its kind in U.S.

Designed for multi-disciplinary use, Michigan State University’s Digital Scholarship Lab is the first in the United States to have an Igloo Vision visualization cylinder, which provides a shared experience in which multiple people can work together while surrounded by a fully immersive 360-degree projection screen. State-of-the-art Digital Scholarship Lab coming to MSU

The Michigan State University Libraries and the College of Arts and Letters are partnering to build a state-of-the-art Digital Scholarship Lab. The 8,000-square-foot space in the Main Library will feature a 360-degree immersive visualization room that will accommodate up to 20 students along with a virtual reality room for experimentation with VR headsets.
